If you’ve been thinking about family photos, there’s a good chance it’s because time just doesn’t slow down.

One day things feel normal, and then suddenly you’re looking at your kids thinking… how did they get this big already?

That’s usually when families start looking for photos—not the stiff, perfectly posed kind, but something that actually feels like them right now. Real life. Real connection. A little messy sometimes, and that’s kind of the point. That’s what family photography is supposed to be.

We’re a husband-and-wife photography team working across Metro Detroit—Oakland County, Macomb County, Lake Orion, Rochester Hills, and nearby areas—and the goal is pretty simple: keep things relaxed enough that families can just… be themselves without overthinking it.

Family Photos Don’t Have to Feel Weird

Most families say something like this before a session: “We’re kind of awkward in photos.”

And honestly, yeah… most people are at first. It’s not really you—it’s just that most of us are used to school photos or those stiff holiday setups where everyone is lined up and told to “act natural,” which never really works. So instead of that, sessions are kept pretty loose.

Usually it’s more like: walking around together kids doing their thing (which is usually chaos, in a good way) talking, laughing, kind of forgetting the camera is even there small direction here and there, but nothing forced And at some point, things just click and it stops feeling like a “photo shoot.” That’s when the good stuff happens.

Around Metro Detroit, It’s Pretty Simple to Find Good Spots

There’s no shortage of places that work well around here.Lake Orion, Rochester Hills, and the surrounding Oakland County areas all have plenty of parks, open fields, and quiet little spots that don’t feel staged or overdone. Some of the usual go-tos:open fields around Lake Orion, wooded trails in Rochester Hills, simple parks scattered through Oakland County, just basic outdoor spaces where kids can move around a bit. Nothing fancy needed. Honestly, the simpler the better most of the time. If the light is good and nobody’s rushing, it usually works.

What Sessions Actually Feel Like

It doesn’t really feel like a traditional “photo shoot.” There’s not a lot of standing still and posing for long stretches. It’s more like: spending time together as a family, a few prompts instead of constant direction, letting kids be kids (which is unpredictable, but good), capturing moments in between everything else. There’s some guidance so things don’t feel awkward, but not so much that it turns into something stiff or unnatural. Most families say afterwards they expected it to feel more uncomfortable than it actually did.

Why These Photos Matter More Than You Think

It’s easy to keep saying “we’ll do family photos someday.” But life doesn’t really wait around for that. Kids grow faster than expected, routines change, and the little everyday moments kind of blur together over time. These photos aren’t about making life look perfect. They’re just about remembering what it actually felt like in this season. Not polished. Not staged. Just real. And years later, that’s what ends up meaning the most anyway.

Final Thoughts

Family photos don’t need to be complicated. They don’t need to feel like a production or something you have to prepare for weeks in advance. It’s really just about slowing down for a bit and letting things be what they are. If that sounds like what you’re looking for, that’s the kind of sessions we try to create.
